In the Mix

I'm always fascinated to see the design choices other people make - when they combine elements I never would have considered. Take the three items above. Never would I have thought to cover a mid-century sofa in a red & white houndstooth and added such an ornate chandelier. But Maloles Miracosta-Antignac did, and you can see the super cool results below:

Yay! It's TVOTR night!

Okay, so this is one of those design-unrelated posts. Sorry. It's just that I'm going to the TVOTR concert tonight and I am so freaking excited! TV On The Radio! Or as my friend Jeff would say, "it's TV on the Mother Effing Radio!" (And effing is exactly what he'd say - Jeff doesn't really curse.) We saw them last year and they were fantastic. And that was before Dear Science was released. Now I get to see them again with a full appreciation for how genius that album is. Ummm... you did buy it last year, right? Right?

As for design... uh.... well... that's some great fake wood panelling in the photo, hey? And the owl? (Sorry. I'll do better tomorrow.)

Pirate Chic

images via 826 Valencia

I came across these pirate posters today on Apartment Therapy. I can't decide which is my favorite - they're all pretty awesome. I think most of the guys I know would approve. Order now and you'll have lots of time to get them framed before International Talk Like a Pirate Day.

Are whales the new owls?

So you know how in decorating we seem to go through these trends in animal motifs? For a while I recall seeing a lot of deer, then birds were big, and then it seemed to be owls. (Yes, I know owls are birds.) I think there were some butterflies in there somewhere too. I've been wondering lately what the next big animal might be. Then I spotted this pic over at {BLACK. WHITE. YELLOW.} and I'm thinking maybe whales? Anyone else care to make a prediction?

Blue & Gold

Anna Weatherley "Colours"

I love pale blue with gold accents. More sophisticated and unexpected than silver. Not that there's anything wrong with blue and silver. (I do have a blue and chrome bathroom after all!) Maybe next time around...

DIY Wallpaper Projects

Folding Panels

Do it Yourself magazine (from Better Homes & Gardens) has ten great wallpaper projects on their website. The three pictured above are my personal faves. I don't have any wallpaper scraps kicking around at the moment, but I do have a lot of great scrapbook paper that would work for the plaque collage. The super slabs of decorative cardstock are perfect because the papers usually coordinate. Come to think of it, those Anna Griffin papers I blogged about the other day would look fantastic!

Field Trip!

images via Michaels

I went to Michaels today. I can waste ridiculous amounts of time in that store. Every time I go I spot something new that makes me stop and think "ooooh..... that's cool. What could I do with that?" Today that something was the Darcey Collection of scrapbook paper by Anna Griffin. I'm not a scrapbooker, but these are great papers you could do all kinds of stuff with. My first thought was that the die cut layers would look nice framed and arranged in a grouping. Well, really any of these papers would look great framed, so snap to it people! (I would snap to it myself but I'm running out of wall space.)

My Dining Room

This is my dining area (and a bit of the kitchen). The kitchen is probably my least favorite room, so I kind of avoid photographing it. I like white cabinets - just not these white cabinets. I'd like to reface them in a flat door with sleek stainless pulls. I'd also like to replace the laminate countertop and lino floor and get stainless appliances. Not happening any time soon. At least what's there is neutral enough to work around. I chose the paint as a nice pop of color against all the white. It's Pittsburgh Paints #255-4 Aqua Chiffon.

The dining room I'm pretty happy with. Yes, that's an Ikea Docksta table. The chairs are by Hothouse Design Studio - an Edmonton based company that sadly is no longer. (I used to work at their Calgary store.) The pendant lamp is the Norm 03 by normann Copenhagen. We probably get more compliments on that light than anything else we own. The teak cabinet my mom bought for us at an estate sale. (Good score, Mom!) The purple canvas above is intentionally hung a little low in order to hide an ugly phone jack. I painted the teapot painting in the corner.

Please Calgary, someone save this house!

I just came across this listing on MLS today. (No, I'm not house hunting, just curious.) It's an old church that's been converted into a house. It's up the hill from my place and I walk by it all the time. It's fascinating to finally get to see the interior. It totally needs a lot of work, but what potential! The open space, the great ceilings, the loft. If I had the money and the guts, I would totally buy it. I just hope the person who does buy it does it justice. Unique properties like this just don't exist much in our city.

Auntie Tara's favorite boys

pictures via Ginger Snap Photography

Jenny Grimwood is an amazing wedding and portrait photographer I first met a few years ago when we worked together. When my best friend's son Oliver had his first birthday, I got them a photo shoot with Jenny. We all loved the pics so much that I of course had to get them another shoot for their newest edition, Simon, when he turned one. (Oliver of course got in on the action, too.) Jenny just posted some of the photos on her blog and they are so good! Simon was in a rather...well... "defiant" mood on the day, so it just proves what a miracle worker Jenny is. You can check out more of her work on her website.

Now THIS is a kitchen.

I just watched chef/cookbook author Jennifer Low’s kitchen tour and I think I’m in love. She has a ladder! There’s a laundry shoot hidden in the island! A kitchen this cool might even motivate me to actually cook something. Watch the tour yourself here:

Concert Posters

Poster via

I love music and I love going to concerts. I also love concert posters. I think they're a great source of affordable art. (Of course it ups the cool quotient if you actually attended the show.) Here are some links to some good sources:

Diner Deluxe

Oh goody! I get to go to Diner Deluxe for dinner tonight! If you live in Calgary I'm sure you're familiar, and if you don't live here I highly recommend it if you're ever in town. Not only is the food super yummy and the staff great, the 50's decor is genuine and it's so much fun! They have a pretty cute website if you want to learn more.

Living here would be really tough, hey?

How great is this Paris loft? I love the eclectic mix of furniture and the bold pops of color against the mostly white walls. You can see all the pics here on the Marie Claire Maison site, but the translation of the text doesn't make for the best read. (I must admit I mostly check out the design mags for the pretty pictures anyway. I confess!)

For Mom

Did you ever make tissue paper flowers when you were a kid? I thought it might be a nice idea for Mothers' Day - cuz moms love it when you make them stuff! If the last time you attempted these was around the time you stopped eating paste, there are some great instructions here.

Yay spring!

Now that spring seems to truly be here (yes, we had rain today instead of snow!) I've got to thinkin bout my balcony. It's sad. I already have two blue Adirondack chairs and cushions and a string of plastic lanterns in storage somewhere. That's it. I was on the Ikea website today and found a few cheap and cheerful things to spruce it up a little. Here's what I've got in mind:

Ramso Parasol $9.99

Blanko Stool (as side table) $16.99

Solig Candles $2.99 ea

Lavaro Rug $39.99

Mynta Plant Pots (maybe not in the budget right now) $49.99 ea

I'll post pictures if I actually get around to doing any of this!

Feather Lamps

images via Trianon

I've been seeing feather lamps around a lot lately. I haven't attempted it, but I'm thinking this could be a DIY project. You could just cover a plain shade or paper lantern. Attaching individual feathers would probably take forever, so I'm thinking feather boas instead. And for the record - I would like the second lamp much better if it was just white and didn't have those black feathers sticking out of it.

BTW - anybody got a suggestion on the best way to dust these things?

My Bathroom

So here's my bathroom. Most of the walls in the apartment are white, but I love the blue color I picked for in here. Love, love, love it! The accent colors are pink, white and red. The little man on the counter is my "Mr O'Lucky" mug from Fitzgeralds Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. He holds my toothbrush. Cuz any guy who gets to hold my toothbrush is lucky ;)

I added the medicine cabinet for extra storage. This one from Ikea was just the right size, but I didn’t want another mirror in there. (The massive counter-wide mirror is already more of me than I really need to see, thanks very much.) I covered the mirrors in white contact paper. I then cut the Swiss-style cross out of stainless finish mactac. Pretty easy to do and super inexpensive.
